...career. It was 1946, and for postwar Americans she still evoked the simpler times when Andy Hardy was in love and the Land of Oz was rainbow hued. Meanwhile, Liza's father, a courtly, cultivated man whom she still idolizes, was busy creating such polished movie musicals as Ziegfeld Follies and Meet Me in St. Louis. Though sometimes frenetic, family life was full of laughter, flowers and music. It was also somehow unreal...
Died. Max Steiner, 83, longtime movie-score composer; in Hollywood. A Viennese prodigy, Steiner began songwriting and conducting while still a teenager. He migrated to the U.S. in 1914, wrote music and did arrangements for George White and Florenz Ziegfeld, then went to Hollywood in 1930. ...comparison, Pretty Maids is truly comic relief - a kinky, funny, often on-target sat ire about libidinous teen-agers and their equally eager elders. Director Vadim constantly undercuts himself with the kind of sleazy eroticism (many shots of panties and nubile cleavage) that has made him a cinematic Flo Ziegfeld, but his decidedly black sense of humor has not been so finely honed since he made Les Liaisons Dangereuses ten years ago. The plot concerns a high school guidance counselor and football coach (nicely played by Rock Hudson) who relates to students in a decidedly intimate fashion. The film does...
