...first glance, Marvelous3's lead singer and guitarist Butch Walker looks like a disturbing mixture of Alice Cooper and Danny Zuko. Appearances are often deceiving, but in this instance Walker's countenance is as paradoxical as the refreshing blend of peppy lyrics and heavy riffs of Hey! Album, the major label debut of Marvelous3. The album has a surprisingly crisp sound, despite the apparent dichotomy between the band's power instrumentals and unabashedly poppy lyrics and up-beat vocals. For three guys with names like Butch and Slug who try very hard to look dark and disturbed, their music...

...inevitability of them looking at least ten years too old to be in high school. Headlined by Rosie O'Donnell as Rizzo, the cast ably fills the cardboard stereotypes: Michelle Blakely as prissy Patty Simcox, Jessica Stone as aimless Frenchy, and Ricky Paull Goldin as tough-guy Danny Zuko...

Grease has no plot; the scenario that connects the musical numbers is the arrival of a new girl at Rydell High, Sandy Dumbrowski (Susan Wood). After her summer romance with high school hot-shot Zuko, he ignores her in front of his gang of delinquent buddies. She is improbably accepted by the Pink Ladies, the school's group of wilder women, despite their scorn for her virginal bobby-sox image. The acting is competent but no one shines. Some genuine emotion or a bit of chemistry between the couples might have made the evening somewhat more bearable. The audience...

Grease, made legendary by the movie starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, focuses on the high school romance of Danny Zuko (Adam Freed) and Sandy Dumbrowski (Faith Salie). Their summer fling is put to the test when Sandy unexpectedly enrolls in Rydell, Danny's high school, and must fit in with his friends. They are the decidedly cool T-Birds and Pink Ladies who do not readily accept good girl Dumbrowski. Sandy's eventual conversion into a spandex-clad vixen has Danny on his knees and the rest of Rydell cheering...

Freed, leading the T-Birds, plays his role with charmingly transparent bravado, accentuating Zuko's immaturity while remaining sympathetic. Kenickie (Barry Littleman) romps through "Greased Lightning," an enjoyable homage to machissmo. Casey Gallagher, as Doody, is amusingly nerdy and boasts one of the strongest voices in the cast. His romance with the much taller Bell has great comic effect...
