One of literature's most modest, sparing and delicate talents, "the incomparable Max," as Shaw called him, belonged to an age of posturing geniuses and aesthetes (Burne-Jones, the Rossettis, Swinburne, Whistler, Oscar Wilde), was one of them but not one with them.
