Would it thus not be natural, if the Americans continued to be held hostage, for Washington to dispatch commandos to rescue them? TIME put this question to nearly two dozen experts in and out of Government. Their near unanimous negative conclusion was summed up by Elmo Zumwalt Jr., the former Chief of Naval Operations: "I think it's pretty much out of the question." Added Robert Cushman Jr., the retired Marine Corps Commandant: "You could kill a lot of Iranians, but you wouldn't save the Americans...
...open letter, warning that the Soviets were "heading for superiority, not parity, in the military arena," ran a full page in the New York Times last week and was signed by 178 retired generals and admirals. Among them: Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt Jr., former Chief of Naval Operations; General Albert C. Wedemeyer, China theater commander in World War II; Major General George J. Keegan Jr., former Air Force chief of intelligence. *The CIA estimates it at more like 11% to 15% of G.N.P. *A reference to Mao's widow, Chiang Ch'ing, and three other high officials who sought...

Some senior petty officers at the Great Lakes Naval Recruit Training Center near Chicago grouse that enlisted personnel do not always stand when an officer enters a room, and that recruits in uniform smoke on the street. Officers hesitate to enforce rules because the new sailers could and perhaps would demand a lengthy explanation before following the orders. Complains Master Chief Petty Officer Charles Chambers in San Diego: "You can't tell a kid to square away his uniform any longer...
...them has been Admiral Thomas H. Moorer, the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; he worried last week that U.S. interests might be placed "in severe jeopardy" some day by the development of a "Torrijos-Castro-Moscow axis." Another retired admiral, former Chief of Naval Operations Elmo Zumwalt, called the canal a "colonialist anachronism" and praised the treaties as "an important step" in assuring U.S. access to the waterway...
