...Kasparov and some other dissidents, the original sin of the new Russia was the 1996 presidential election, in which--with the help of massive injections of funds from business oligarchs--Boris Yeltsin won re-election over Gennady Zyuganov, the Communists' leader. Kasparov now says that he and other liberals made a "horrible mistake when we endorsed Yeltsin and looked the other way out of fear for a communist comeback. We missed the whole point that democracy is not about results. Democracy is about upholding regulations and having a legitimate transfer of power...

...presidential candidate in even worse straits: Russian President Boris Yeltsin. A hero for leading his country out of communism in the early '90s, he is now, amid economic ruin and a war in Chechnya, the goat. Polls show him trailing not only his main opponent, communist Gennadi Zyuganov, but also Joseph Stalin, the long-dead Soviet dictator...

The race was surprisingly close, considering polls showed Putin with 50 percent of the vote last week, and considering he was virtually the official candidate of the Russian government. Putin's support was soft in the Russian Far East, where Communists such as Zyuganov have done well in the past...

...Chechnya primary. Russia's parliament on Wednesday scheduled the election to choose Boris Yeltsin's successor for March 26, and the results of December's parliamentary elections suggest that acting president Putin has a commanding lead over his likely rivals - former prime minister Yevgeny Primakov, Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov and ultra-nationalist fringe candidate Vladimir Zhirinovsky. But although Russia's campaign in Chechnya has propelled Putin from obscurity to presidential front-runner, setbacks on the military front could hurt his approval ratings. "Chechnya has been Putin's only political calling card, and so far it's worked for him," says...
